RESEARCH ON CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION AND ADAPTATION FOR EQUITABLE PEACE, RESILIENCE, AND FOOD SECURITY

The human, environmental and economic consequences of climate change are concerning, but not irreversible. By prioritizing science, we can design a more sustainable and resilient way forward. Key areas where the Alliance contributes to climate change mitigation and adaptation are: research data and evidence, digital innovations, finance and investments, policies, and gender & social inclusion.

From Climate Change to Climate Action

Our climate science covers four main areas:

Net-Zero development

Upscaling food and land systems transformation for reduced greenhouse gas emissions

Our Initiatives

Our work in climate builds on decades of research, including the CGIAR research program on Climate Change, Agriculture, and Food Security.

We are making climate information services and climate-smart agriculture more accessible to millions of smallholder farmers across Africa with AICCRA: Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa. Led by the Alliance, AICCRA has six country teams in Senegal, Mali, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya and Zambia who, alongside regional initiatives, work with national, regional and continental partners across Africa to increase access to - and use of -enhanced climate information services and validated packages of climate-smart agriculture innovations developed by CGIAR for smallholder farmers.

AICCRA partnerships have reached seven million people since 2021, and the World Bank has committed USD 100 million in additional finance to AICCRA for the coming years.

We are supporting low- and middle-income countries' efforts to build climate resilience capacity with the CGIAR Initiative ClimBeR. The CGIAR Research Initiative on Climate Resilience (ClimBeR) is bolstering the capacity of food, land, and water systems in low-and middle-income countries to adapt to climate change. It does this by identifying the root causes of vulnerability to climate change - especially that of smallholder farmers - and enhancing the evidence base on innovations that build climate resilience.

ClimBeR primarily works in the six 'focus' countries of Guatemala, Kenya, Morocco, the Philippines, Senegal, and Zambia. With over 236 local, national, regional and global partners, the Initiative enables local ownership of inclusive innovations prioritizing social cohesion and the needs of vulnerable groups - such as Indigenous communities, youth and women - as equal stakeholders of policies and solutions that accelerate and strengthen climate adaptation.
