Climate Security and Migration

Climate Security - Alliance Bioversity International - CIAT

Exploring the climate's interactions with the root causes of conflict, migration, and instability: where, how, and for whom

Why it matters

As the climate continues to change, the management of land, water, and food systems by governments and communities has become a crucial determinant of societal stability and peace.

The conflicts witnessed globally since the start of the 21st century highlight a clear trend: disputes between communities, and armed groups, are increasingly influenced by climate change, environmental degradation, food insecurity, and the competition for scarce natural resources.

While the global community rightly invests in essential peace and security operations, the critical interconnections between climate, food, and peace have yet to be fully integrated into the global policy framework.

These challenges make it imperative to understand the climate security nexus – the intricate relationships between the climate, socio-political vulnerabilities, and human security.

Our work in advancing climate security

The Alliance has been leading climate action work in fragile and conflict-affected areas through its CGIAR FOCUS Climate Security Team.

CGIAR FOCUS Climate Security is bridging knowledge gaps about how climate influences root causes of conflict, fragility, and displacement, where is this happening, and for whom amidst the world's most vulnerable communities.

With 60+ researchers working in more than 25 countries and based in 6 regional hubs (Cali, Cairo, Dakar, Hanoi, Nairobi, Pretoria) strategically located in climate and security hotspots, and through our flagship innovations, such as the Climate Security Observatory, we provide evidence and technical advisory to governments, international bodies, and other development agencies to ensure that climate risk considerations are seamlessly integrated into peace interventions and vice versa.

The main objective is to transform climate adaptation into an instrument for peace and stability by aligning land, water, and food systems science with peacebuilding ambitions.

This alignment aims to tackle socio-political security challenges and promote stability and peace by co-designing and co-implementing evidence-based environmental, political, and socio-economic solutions with strategic partners across the Humanitarian, Development, and Peace (HDP) Nexus. One example is our partnership with UNHCR which enables the integration of climate security principles into humanitarian aid strategies, amplifying our impact on the ground.
