Nepal - The Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT

Our mission in Nepal

In Nepal, the Alliance's objective is to support the sustainable transformation of the Nepalese agricultural landscape. Our research-based and evidence-informed solutions on natural resource management and environmental conservation and management help facilitate farmers’ and other value chain actors’ actions towards achieving an inclusive, diverse and resilient agri-food system transformation in the country.

Challenges

Central to Nepal’s economy, the agriculture sector provides livelihoods to approximately 66% of the population, spanning various farming systems ranging from larger-scale production to small-scale enterprises. Like other largely agrarian countries in the region, Nepal continues to face a multitude of roadblocks in the growth of its agriculture sector, including the interconnected issues of degrading natural resources, inefficient seed systems, and underdeveloped agricultural policies and institutions. The Alliance's commitment to become one of the government’s trusted partners in addressing key areas of interest in Nepal is key to our strategy.

Thematic focus areas

Our presence in Nepal is focused on contributing to Nepal’s Agriculture Development Strategy 2015-2035, contributing actionable Alliance research on food systems transformation, climate action, the access and conservation of agrobiodiversity, pest and disease management, and innovations and partnerships to champion better livelihoods and food and nutrition security in the country. By strengthening our collaboration with national and local-level experts, as well as with relevant stakeholders, we capture on-ground and science-based evidence to contribute to building resilience across Nepalese agri-food value chains.

The wide range of disciplines and thematic areas undertaken by the Alliance and its partners reflect the value of the Nepal Himalayas as one of the centers of globally important gene pools of traditional crop biodiversity, with significant opportunities to address climate change, malnutrition and environmental degradation. In Nepal, this work is operationalized by engaging in the following research areas:

Opportunities

The Alliance works to strengthen and expand partnerships with national organizations and institutions to co-develop research and training opportunities to address national priorities, in addition to already established areas of work in the country.
