China - Alliance of Bioversity International - CIAT

Our Mission in China

In delivering results and outcomes geared towards sustainable agriculture and food systems transformation, the Alliance in China builds on long-term collaboration and capacity development with national and sub-national partners from the public and private sectors, academia and civil society groups. Throughout the years, we remain committed to accelerating the conservation and use of agrobiodiversity to contribute to sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture, food and nutrition security, sustainable livelihoods and regional and international cooperation.

Challenges

China’s high-input-high-output approach to extensive agricultural production has significantly exacerbated environmental challenges in the country, placing the country atop the world’s largest annual greenhouse gas emitter over the past decade. As increasing demands for a more innovative and green transition to China’s agri-food sector become more apparent with rising international pressure, the Alliance is resolute in its commitment to supporting the government achieve its ambitions of peaking carbon emissions before 2030 and attaining carbon neutrality before 2060 through actionable research that sustains agricultural value chains across the country.

The 3rd Agrobiodiversity Congress

With the theme Agrobiodiversity for People and Planet, the conference - hosted by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the Alliance - provides a platform for exchange and cooperation among policymakers, scientists, producers, entrepreneurs, and farmers related to the conservation and sustainable use of agrobiodiversity around the world.

Thematic areas of focus

Transforming sustainable agriculture at the height of a steadily changing climate is the core of the Alliance's work in China. This mission aligns with the government’s 14th five-year development period (2021-2025) to achieve a fair transition from poverty reduction to rural revitalization while advancing agriculture, rural development and farmers’ livelihoods. By working closely with national and local experts at the nexus of agricultural biodiversity, genetic innovation and production systems, along with continued engagement with stakeholders, we capture evidence-based solutions to form geographically differentiated strategies and contribute to building resilience across the value chain.

The wide range of disciplines and thematic areas undertaken by the Alliance and its partners contribute to the global work on climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable food systems. In China, this work is operationalized by engaging in the following research areas:

Projects and flagship initiatives

Directly contributing to our research areas in China, these projects and flagship initiatives are creating positive impacts for the livelihoods of the communities we work with.
