Our Mission in Vietnam

For over a decade, the Alliance in Vietnam continues to deliver successful results and outcomes contributing to sustainable transformation of food systems, putting forward science-based solutions in areas that cut across existing and emerging issues in agroecosystems, climate action, biodiversity for food and agriculture, and consumer behavior, among others.

Our country office is based in the capital, Hanoi, since 2015. The Alliance is strategically positioned to join and lead dialogues on both national and regional importance while ensuring our research strengthens efforts to address challenges across the northern highlands to the southern provinces, particularly along the nexus of agriculture, environment, nutrition, and climate change. Our work in Vietnam continues to align with national priorities, keeping our commitments as trusted partners with government agencies, academe, private sector, and civil society groups to transform climate-resilient agriculture and food systems.

Challenges

To safeguard food systems transformation in Vietnam underscored by climate risks, the Alliance is contributing to delivering actionable research that aims to bridge science into policy and capture relevant lessons that not only impacts national-level decisions but also open different opportunities to improve people’s lives and diets at a household level.

Thematic areas of focus

While Vietnam is experiencing rapid economic growth and urbanization, its rural and peri-urban areas remain largely dependent on local agriculture and food systems as their main source of sustenance, including livelihoods. The increasing movement to cities has slowly defined what, where, and how food is grown in peri-urban and rural areas. The compounding impacts of climate change also puts nutrition and food production more at risk as rainfall and temperatures change across the country.

In Vietnam, we are specifically contributing to the following research areas:

  • Food environment and consumer behavior
  • Livestock and tropical forages
  • Cassava
  • Digital Agriculture
  • Agroecosystems and sustainable landscapes
  • Climate Action
  • Biodiversity for Food and Nutrition
