Project Description

MEDA and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) are collaborating to promote climate-adapted agricultural production and profitable entrepreneurship in Senegal's Tambacounda and Sédhiou regions.The AVENIR project (Adaptation and Entrepreneurial Valorization in Irrigation and Rural Agriculture) aims to enhance the socio-economic well-being and resilience of agricultural households, particularly women and youth in the Sédhiou (Bounkiling and Goudomp departments) and Tambacounda (Goudiry and Tambacounda departments) regions. Based on results-oriented management, this project funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) for a period from 2019 to 2026, aims to reach a target of 11,500 direct clients in the value chains of rice, cashew, mango, baobab fruit, and horticulture. To achieve this, in addition to its technical partner the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), the NGO MEDA is collaborating with local partner organizations (LPOs), technical services, civil society actors, and the private sector to implement the project's activities. 

Key activities

  • Diversified, productive and profitable agricultural systems (rice, horticulture and agroforestry), adapted to agro-ecological conditions, and resilient to climate change.
  • Increased supply of and demand for diversified nutritious foods.  
  • Enhanced value-added activities, including product aggregation, storage, processing and marketing of rice, baobab, mango and cashew products to increase the profitability of agri-businesses.  
  • Increased participation of women and youth in decision-making concerning the governance of water and soil resources.
