Using typologies to target gender investments in agrifood supply chains

Using typologies to target private sector investments in gender equality and social inclusion in agrifood supply chains. Methodological guidance and good practices.

This toolkit is designed to help agrifood companies, Voluntary Sustainability Systems (VSS), and other stakeholders—ranging from trade, research, and policy to market-focused programs—enhance gender equality and social inclusion within supply chains. It provides a structured approach to:

  1. Map the diverse actors involved in the upstream nodes of a supply chain, with a focus on women.
  2. Assess the benefits, contributions, and challenges that different groups of women and men experience.
  3. Identify opportunities to improve the targeting and design of value chain initiatives, fostering more equitable participation and outcomes for women in agrifood systems.

In what context is this tool useful?

This tool is particularly useful when supply chain stakeholders need actionable strategies to promote gender equality and social inclusion. The expected outcome is for companies, Voluntary Sustainability Systems (VSS), and other actors to develop gender-responsive approaches that enhance participation, address barriers, create more equitable opportunities within agrifood supply chains, and integrate gender equality into their operations.

Results achieved

This approach has been successfully applied in Honduras and India, supporting key partners in advancing gender-responsive strategies within agrifood supply chains.

  • Honduras: Worked with Volcafe, Swisscontact, and Olam Honduras to develop gender-responsive business strategies in the coffee supply chain.
  • India: Supported the Ethical Tea Partnership in collecting evidence on the diversity of women in the tea supply chain and their working conditions, contributing to more inclusive and equitable practices.

Variations, scaling and adaptations

The tool can be used and adapted by agribusinesses, international organizations working on supply chains, public-private partnership platforms or multi-stakeholder platforms addressing gender and social inclusion in supply chains.
