Blog Remembering Marleni Ramirez: Champion for biodiversity and dear colleague
Dr. Marleni Ramirez was a distinguished biologist and ecologist, widely recognized for her leadership, vision, and lifelong commitment to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Over more than three decades, including 20 years of dedicated service to Bioversity International and the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, she made enduring contributions across Latin America, Africa, and the global scientific community.
A life dedicated to agrobiodiversity
Throughout her career, Marleni championed the conservation and sustainable use of agrobiodiversity as a foundation for resilient food systems and improved rural livelihoods. She led the development of the Strategic Action Plan for the Conservation and Use of Plant Genetic Resources for Mesoamerica, which was recognized by FAO as a model for participatory, science-based planning.
Her leadership extended to pioneering initiatives on the genetic diversity of Capsicum peppers and fine flavor cacao, integrating research, innovation, and local enterprise development. She also played a pivotal role in advancing the Agrobiodiversity Index and the PACS concept (Payments for Agrobiodiversity Conservation Services), both of which continue to shape sustainable agricultural landscapes across the Americas.
Community connections
Marleni found great joy in working closely with communities. Most recently, she was leading the community seed bank project in Cumbal, Nariño, high in the mountains of southern Colombia.
Just two weeks prior to her passing, she traveled to Cumbal with her colleague and friend Ronnie Vernooy, spending time with the community, analyzing data, and preparing a visit from a group of journalists. “Everyone is going to see the impact our project is having on Indigenous communities, on the empowerment of women and young people”, she said.
In that search for forgotten seeds, Marleni was surprised by an “arracacha” root soup offered by the communities. She said it was the best hot soup of her life, enjoyed at over 3,000 meters above sea level.
Representing Bioversity and the Alliance in Peru
Marleni served for a decade as Regional Director for the Americas at Bioversity International in Cali, Colombia, and later as the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT’s Representative in Lima, Peru. Through her leadership, she strengthened institutional partnerships, fostered regional collaboration, and positioned agrobiodiversity as a key pillar in sustainable development strategies throughout the region. She always reminded us that biodiversity is not just a commodity, but an expression of culture and resilience.
Those who knew Marleni will remember her for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering belief in people's capacity to create positive change. She was a source of inspiration and strength for many, and her legacy will live on in the landscapes, communities, and colleagues she touched with her vision and humanity.
The Alliance of Bioversity & CIAT team extends its deepest condolences to her family, friends, and all who mourn her loss. Together, we will continue to honor her memory and carry forward the work to which Marleni dedicated her life.
