Agriculture for Peru's present and future: sustainability and resilience

The Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT offers science-based solutions that harness agricultural biodiversity to sustainably transform food systems and improve people's lives. The Alliance is part of the CGIAR: a global research partnership for a food-secure future.

More than four decades responding to the needs of the country

For more than 40 years, the Alliance has worked closely with institutions and communities in Peru, building a strong partnership that has generated significant results. These efforts contribute to knowledge and understanding, as well as the promotion of agrobiodiversity, the strengthening of climate resilience in agriculture and the development of sustainable food systems. In addition, this work has supported the formulation of key public policies, such as the Law on Mechanisms for the Payment for Ecosystem Services, through the provision of specialized technical inputs.

In the 2000s, through the genetic resources policy initiative, we supported the development of the official work plans of the body that gave rise to MINAM on genetic resources policies, such as the National Register of Native Crops and agrobiodiversity protected areas, which evolved into today's Agrobiodiversity Zones.

The power of collaboration

Our research and innovations in Peru are the result of collaborative work with different actors from the public and private sectors, and civil society, which supports lasting impact at different scales. Thanks to this joint work with different national and international partners and the support of our funders, the Alliance has forged a research agenda in Peru that responds to the country's priorities, helping to promote climate-resilient agriculture and more sustainable food systems.

Our work in Peru has been possible thanks to the support of the Peruvian government (MIDAGRI, MINAM) and our funders: CGIAR, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMU), European Commission, FORD Foundation, GIZ, United Nations Environment Programme UNEP, Korea Rural Development Administration, among others.

Projects and Flagship Initiatives

To achieve the missions of our work in Peru, we undertake several projects, each tackling different challenges and enacting certain impacts towards improving food systems and livelihoods in Peru.
