The TARSPro project ('Technologies and Agricultural Innovations for Strengthening the Resilience of Production Systems and Family Farms in West and Central Africa') aims to promote promising agricultural technologies and innovations to enhance sustainable food security, nutrition and the economic well-being of populations in West and Central Africa.

Project Name (full): Agricultural technologies and innovations for increasing the resilience of production systems and family farms in West and Central Africa

Start and end date:  2021 to 2025

Geographic area, countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Chad

Funders: Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC)

Other partners: West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development (CORAF), National Institute of Agricultural Research of Benin (INRAB), Institute of Environment and Agricultural Research of Burkina Faso (INERA), Institute of Rural Economy (IER), National Institute for Agronomic Research of Niger (INRA), and Chadian Institute of Agronomic Research for Development (ITRAD)

Description

The TARSPro project - funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented by CORAF - works to enhance the resilience of food production systems for at least two million producers and processors—50% women and 60% youth—across five countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Chad). The project is designed to sustainably meet the demand for agricultural knowledge and innovations among at least 40% of family farms, ultimately benefiting over ten million people indirectly. National implementation teams, embedded in each country’s National Agricultural Research Institute, coordinate local initiatives.

Key activities and achievements to date include establishing Climate-Smart Villages, setting up Agricultural Innovation Platforms and creating four national science-policy dialogue platforms. These interventions strengthen climate adaptation, foster collaboration among stakeholders and promote evidence-based policymaking. To date, three countries (Burkina Faso, Benin, and Mali) have operational mechanisms for disseminating climate information. Several capacity-building sessions have also elevated local expertise, ensuring lasting impact.

Key Activities

TARSPro’s unique approach lies in its regional scope, emphasis on inclusivity—particularly of women and youth—and focus on climate resilience. This integrated strategy ensures that solutions are both practical and scalable, ultimately contributing to greater food security and economic well-being across West and Central Africa.
