The Alliance at UNCCD COP17: Restoring Land, Restoring Hope

UNCCD COP17 LogoDesertification is putting sustainable food production at risk. As land degradation accelerates and drought impacts worsen, UNCCD COP17 puts restoration — and hope — back on the global agenda. Here are the details of the Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT's participation.

Desertification affects up to 40% of the world’s land area. The degradation of soil, farm, and rangelands has severe implications for our ability to sustainably produce food.

Amidst this context of accelerating land degradation, worsening drought impacts, and growing geopolitical concern around food security and rural stability, UNCCD COP17 is the first of three Rio Convention meetings in 2026. COP17 gathers delegates from around the world under the theme of “Restoring Land, Restoring Hope”. The conference’s people-centered agenda links land restoration to livelihoods, security, and economic opportunity, with a strong emphasis on scaled implementation, financing, and resilience outcomes.

Aligning with the ongoing International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists and the International Year of the Woman Farmer, COP17 places restoration as central to achieving climate, biodiversity, and food security goals. The Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT contributes expertise and solutions in three areas specifically for COP17:

  • Rangelands and pastures: Advancing low-emission livestock systems through improved forages and regenerative grazing.
  • Soil health and drought resilience: Combining regenerative practices, climate intelligence, and resilient crops.
  • Regenerative agriculture, agroforestry and agroecology: Supporting sustainable forest–agriculture landscapes through restoration, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable rural development.
