The Alliance at the Ethiopian National Agroecology Strategy launch

On March 14 2026, the Government of Ethiopia, through its Ministry of Agriculture, officially launches the National Agroecology Strategy for Food System Transformation (2026–2040).

This milestone marks a significant step toward resilient, sustainable and inclusive food systems. Developed through a year-long, multi-stakeholder process, the strategy provides a framework to address interconnected challenges, including climate change, land degradation, biodiversity loss and food insecurity.

The launch also highlights the Ethiopian National Agroforestry Development Strategy (NAFDS). Together, these strategies form a coherent roadmap for sustainable agriculture and stronger food systems.

The event brings together senior government representatives, development partners, research institutions, civil society, private sector actors and farmer organizations to foster shared ownership and catalyze coordinated implementation at scale.

Our involvement

The Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT supports the Government of Ethiopia in the development and launch of the National Agroecology Strategy, in close collaboration with CIFOR-ICRAF.

As technical partner and co-facilitator of the process, the Alliance contributed to strategic design, stakeholder engagement, evidence generation and operational planning, including the development of the NAES Implementation Matrix.

This work was supported through the EU-funded TRANSITIONS Programme, managed by IFAD, alongside additional contributions from CGIAR science programs and development partners. Through this engagement, the Alliance helps translate agroecology from policy into practice, strengthening institutional capacity, supporting knowledge co-creation and enabling investment-ready pathways for food systems transformation.

The launch event also reflects the Alliance’s broader commitment to advancing science-based, locally adapted solutions that place smallholder farmers, pastoralists and agro-pastoralists at the center of climate-resilient development.
