Crop Observatories

The Crop Observatories are comprehensive crop-specific data platforms for Musa, Common Beans, Cassava, and Rice (Forages, coming soon). These platforms provide valuable data, insights, and tools to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability by integrating data from various sources.
The information displayed on the platforms is provided through open-access primary and secondary information sources from different national and international organizations.
ACCESS THE PLATFORMs
In what context is this tool useful?
The Crop Observatories are useful for anyone who needs to integrate many sources of data on certain key crops: from trade to production and consumption, including articles, guidelines, databases and more.
Variations, applications and scaling
The Crop Observatories platforms are designed to be adaptable and scalable, allowing for the inclusion of additional crops and data as needed. Researchers within the Alliance and from various institutions have shown interest in collaborating to expand the information available on the platforms. There is potential for creating observatories for other crops, such as Millet and Potato.
Musa Observatory
Led by the Foresight and Applied Economics (FAE) team and the Musaceae Program of The Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, this observatory provides indicators related to the global Musaceae production context. It includes data per country involved, on production systems, trade, consumption, technologies, and recent news. See more here.
Common Beans Observatory
This observatory, supported by the Pan-African Bean Research Alliance (PABRA), offers data on global bean production. It covers production systems, trade, competitiveness information, crop-related technology inventory, consumption, seed systems, varieties, and socioeconomics, presenting information in a dynamic and interactive way. See more here.
Rice Observatory
Led by the Laboratory of Applied Economics of the Alliance and supported by the Latin American Fund for Irrigated Rice (FLAR), this observatory focuses on rice production in Latin America. It provides data per country involved on production systems, trade and competitiveness, consumption, policies, technologies, and agronomic management. See more here.
Cassava Observatory
The Cassava Lighthouse is an open-access platform focused on the cassava economy worldwide. It provides data on productivity, trade, policies, genetic improvement, and pests and diseases, aiming to strengthen decision-making and highlight the crop's global contribution. See more here.
