Regional Workshop on Climate Transparency in Latin America

In September 2025, representatives from Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador met in Guatemala City for the second phase of the GIC-LAC project, with the aim of strengthening Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems in the Agriculture and Land Use (LULUCF) sectors.

The meeting focused on reviewing national progress, identifying technical and institutional gaps, and generating inputs for the development of roadmaps to improve the quality of greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and move toward more advanced methodologies.

Workshop Objectives:

  • To raise awareness of the initiative among the countries participating in the project.
  • To promote joint efforts through a collaborative platform that brings together the participating countries.
  • Exchange experiences and lessons learned to compare and enrich national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reports.
  • Collectively define the priorities, needs, opportunities, and challenges to improve national emissions reporting systems.
  • Strengthen the technical capacities of those responsible for GHG emissions inventories and Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems.

How the workshop unfolded

The workshop combined technical presentations with participatory exercises to compare the literature review with the countries’ experiences. Delegations shared progress and challenges in their MRV systems; a capacity assessment was conducted on the use of methodologies and climate reports; and through activities such as criteria prioritization and national working groups, gaps in data, methodologies, and institutional arrangements were identified, along with concrete actions to strengthen reporting systems in agriculture and land use.

GIC-LAC is funded through the New Zealand Government's Climate Smart Agriculture Initiative as part of its contribution to the Global Research Alliance on Greenhouse Gases in Agriculture (GRA), and CGIAR through Climate Action and Scaling for Impact Science Programs.
