Mark Lundy

Mark Lundy is a Research Director at the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT in Cali, Colombia, where he leads the global Food Environment and Consumer Behavior team. His research examines how food environments — the markets, vendors, and everyday transactions through which most people in low- and middle-income countries access food — shape dietary choices and long-term health outcomes, including exposure to non-communicable diseases.

A central focus is food system governance: working with national and subnational governments across Africa, Asia, and Latin America to develop transformation strategies grounded in how markets actually function. Using participatory and multistakeholder approaches, Mark convenes policymakers, communities, and market actors around shared evidence and co-designed solutions — work that has contributed to the Alliance's Good Practice Guides Series and the Food System Country Profiles initiative.

His current research addresses the intersections of climate resilience, social inclusion, and nutrition — three challenges that are frequently treated in isolation but are deeply interdependent in traditional food environments. The broader aim is to establish food systems as an effective lever for improving population health and wellbeing.
