Mario Contreras Fleury
Mario Contreras Fleury is a researcher specializing in agricultural systems analysis and evidence synthesis for sustainable development. He is convinced that by uniting efforts across sectors and disciplines, and by being honest about the future we want, it is possible to build a world where healthy food for all and thriving ecosystems coexist.
Throughout his academic career, he has worked on a range of projects related to sustainable agriculture. He designed a monitoring tool for ecosystem-based adaptation in the traditional Chinampas system of Xochimilco in Mexico City, explored the implementation potential of regenerative almonds, oats, and peaches in Spain, and conducted a systematic review of regenerative practices in temperate arable and vegetable systems.
His current work focuses on tropical cropping systems in Latin America. He integrates multiple data sources and analytical methods to better understand how agricultural transitions occur in practice. He views farming as an interconnected system where farmers make rational decisions based on the realities, constraints, and opportunities around them.
He employs rigorous quantitative methods, always aiming to pair scientific rigor with practical value for farmers, supply chain actors, and sustainability practitioners. He collaborates closely with transdisciplinary teams and local partners to ensure that research outputs translate into actionable guidance for improving sustainability performance across supply chains.
