Blog PlaSA Colombia present at the electoral dialogue in Cali on health, welfare and food systems.

In the framework of the regional elections of Colombia 2023, specifically in the city of Cali, PlaSA Colombia joined the fourth debate of candidates for mayor of this city, this time dedicated to the topics of health, wellness and food systems organized by ProPacífico, unions, universities and the media.

During this session, each candidate was given an infographic that highlights some of the key elements that currently define the food systems landscape in Cali. This tool not only serves as a valuable informational resource upon which candidates can base their proposals, but is also a manifestation of PlaSA Colombia's Food Systems Community of Practice's interest in contributing to informed decision making through the provision and analysis of clear, useful and timely data.

At the debate, there was an opportunity to hear the candidates' proposals and discuss key perspectives for the city moving forward on these issues, highlighting the need to promote everything from sustainable agricultural practices that decrease the city's dependence on food imports while contributing to the protection and regeneration of the environment, to ensuring equitable access to safe and nutritious food to decrease high rates of food insecurity as well as health and socioeconomic impacts.

The data provided by PlaSA Colombia in the infographic piece served as a starting point for candidates and the community at large to understand the complexity of local food systems, from production to distribution to consumption, as each stage has direct implications on the health and long-term sustainability of the city.

PlaSA Colombia positions itself as a key ally in this electoral process by providing candidates with detailed and timely information on Cali's food systems. The delivery of the infographic not only seeks to inform about the current situation, but to provide inputs that inspire a deeper dialogue about the solutions and strategies needed to strengthen these systems.

The community of practice in food systems PlaSA Colombia, is comprised of institutions from academia, research, and public and private sector at the national level, extends an invitation to all stakeholders, from electoral leaders to engaged citizens, to learn more about how the platform can provide ongoing support in the different stages of designing and implementing healthier and more sustainable food public policies.
