Recent progress in cassava varietal improvement in the Philippines
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/82404
Abstract
The report covers varietal improvement for the period 1990-1993. Not much progress was made in the 1990/91 season due to the occurence of a super typhoon that damaged standing field trials. In recent years, however, progress in selection was made in terms of high yield and dry matter content and good plant type.
The cassava germplasm bank of PRCRTC has currently a total of 270 accessions, includeing 30 varieties introduced…

Household Welfare Effects of Stress-Tolerant Varieties in Northern Uganda
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/98409
Abstract
This study assessed the adoption of stress-tolerant varieties and their effect on household welfare, measured by net crop income per capita in Nwoya District, Uganda. The stress-tolerant varieties were considered to be climate-smart because they stabilise and increase crop income in the presence of climatic shocks. However, the uptake of the stress-tolerant varieties was still low in northern Uganda, due to bad past…

Climate-Smart Agricultural Value Chains: Risks and Perspectives
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/98412
Abstract
Extreme weather is causing significant problems for smallholder farmers and others who depend on agricultural value chains in developing countries. Although value-chain analysis can help untangle the complex relationships within agricultural systems, it often has failed to take into account the effects of climate change. Climate-change assessments, meanwhile, often focus on the production node while neglecting other components…

The Role of Multi-Stakeholder Platforms for Creating an Enabling Climate Change Policy Environment in East Africa
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/98413
Abstract
Research-based evidence on the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices is vital to their effective uptake, continued use and wider diffusion. In addition, an enabling policy environment at the national and regional levels is necessary for this evidence to be used effectively. This chapter analyzes a 4-year period of continuous policy engagement in East Africa in an…

Rehabilitation of Degraded Lands in Semiarid and Subhumid Ecologies in India
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/98519
Abstract
Land degradation is a complex phenomenon caused by natural and anthropogenic factors. These factors create and accelerate soil erosion and contribute to the loss of biodiversity and degradation of soil quality and hydrological features. Adoption of a gamut of appropriate soil and water conservation measures, protection of vegetation from overgrazing, assisted regeneration of vegetation, etc. maybe one of the viable…

Future Climate Projections in Africa: Where Are We Headed?
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/98415
Abstract
This paper offers an overview of how climate change is already affecting farmers across eastern and southern Africa, and how it will continue to affect them in the future. The rising temperatures and increased rainfall variability associated with climate change are undermining the livelihoods and food security of Africa’s farmers, most of whom work at a subsistence level and also face problems of poverty, inadequate infrastructure…

A Participatory Approach to Assessing the Climate-Smartness of Agricultural Interventions: The Lushoto Case
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/98417
Abstract
The concept of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is gaining momentum across the globe. However, it is not specific on what should be covered under its three pillars—productivity, resilience and mitigation. Consequently, CSA encompasses many different agricultural practices/technologies, making it difficult to prioritise CSA objectives. Firstly, there is a lack of clear and workable…
