Stephen Mutuvi
Stephen Mutuvi has a background in Computer Science and holds a PhD in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning. His research applies advanced AI to address global challenges in food security, healthcare, and climate change.
He is a Scientist at the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, where he leads AI research in the Artemis and NDIZI projects, advancing methods for digital crop phenotyping and farmer-centered participatory plant breeding. As Principal Investigator of NDIZI (NLP to Develop and Innovate Zero-shot Intelligence), he pioneers the use of speech technologies and large language models to capture and analyze farmer feedback, embedding farmer voices directly into breeding pipelines so that new crop varieties are better aligned with their needs and the realities of smallholder farming contexts
