Andrea Ghione

Andrea Ghione is a political scientist, an agricultural economist and a political economist with twenty five years working experience in developing countries as: project manager and rural/agricultural-economist for Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT (CGIAR) in Kenya, Ethiopia, Congo DR, Colombia, India, Vietnam, Laos and Indonesia; programme manager for agricultural development at Italian Agency for Development Cooperation in Burkina Faso, Niger and Ghana; chief technical advisor on agro-industrial development for United Nations Industrial Development Organization in Ethiopia; senior economist of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) in Ethiopia; NGO country manager (Burkina Faso), programme manager (for agricultural finance in Sénégal, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Mauritania, Guinée Conakry, Benin and Burundi) and project manager in Sénégal; consultant in agricultural and rural development for international organisations (International Fund for Agricultural Development in Mauritania), NGOs (in Guiné Bissao and Niger) and private firms (in Ethiopia and Burkina Faso), lecturer on agricultural finance at the University of Turin.

He holds a PhD in Economics and Industrial Development Policy from the Universities of Parma and Ferrara (Italy), a MSc in Agricultural Economics from SOAS University of London and a MA in Political Sciences from the University of Turin (Italy).

He has significant experience in the design and implementation of agricultural and agro-industrial policies and related interventions that consider the global, national and local political economy contexts and enable inclusive and sustainable development in rural communities of developing countries. To that effect, he has facilitated multistakeholder policy-processes involving governments, donors, civil society organisations, private sector organisations, farmers’ and pastoralists’ organisations at both national and local levels.

He has specific expertise in project management, development of value chains of neglected and underutilised species, agro-ecotourism with indigenous communities, rural and agricultural finance, and pastoralism.

His mother tongue is Italian, and he is fluent in English, French and Spanish. He is proficient in Microsoft Office, with excellent skills in SPSS.
