Tumaini Mobile Application Privacy Policy

The Alliance of Bioversity and CIAT provides the Tumaini Mobile Application as a free-to-use application. The services in the application are provided at no cost and are intended for use as is. This document informs you about the data we collect when you interact with the Tumaini Mobile Application provided by the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT. When we collect any personal information, we act as a data controller. We are legally required to provide you with information about who we are, why and how we use your data, and what rights you have over your data.

2.    What personal data do we collect?

You have to be registered to use the Tumaini Mobile Application. To create and manage user accounts, we collect the following personal information during the registration process:

  • Work/Institutional Email Address
  • Password (securely encrypted)
  • Gender
  • Institutional Affiliation
  • Professional Position
  • Country of Residence

In addition to user registration data, the application collects Global Positioning System (GPS) location data associated with submitted photographs. We are committed to data minimization and only collect information that is necessary for the effective functioning of the application and the provision of our services.

3.    Why do we collect this information?

We collect user registration data to:

  • Create and manage user accounts
  • Allow the application to upload and store photos effectively
  • Improve our services and user experience

We collect GPS location data to provide a disease mapping feature. This feature allows users to plot the GPS locations of healthy and sick plants, helping them monitor and manage plant diseases more efficiently.

4.     What do we do with your information?

We only store personal information on the platform for account management, image storage, and processing. The GPS locations collected in the photographs are used for the disease mapping feature within the Tumaini Mobile Application. We do not share any personally identifiable information with any third parties.

5.    How long do we retain information?

User account information and associated data will be retained for the lifetime of the Tumaini project, up to a maximum of 10 years. The GPS location data collected by the Tumaini Mobile Application will be retained for the same period.
If you wish to have your account information or submitted GPS data removed from the database before the end of this period, you can email [email protected] at any time to make a request.

6.    Your rights over your information

By law, you can ask us what information we hold about you and to correct it if it is inaccurate. You can also ask for it to be erased or ask us to stop using your information. The simplest way to do this is to withdraw your consent, which you can do at any time, either by emailing or writing using the contact details above.
