Remembering Dr. Joachim Voss and his contributions

With deep respect and sadness, we acknowledge the passing of Dr. Joachim Voss, who served as Director General of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) from 2000 to 2007.

Dr. Voss, a citizen of Canada and a Rockefeller Foundation RockyDoc Fellow, previously served in CIAT’s Bean Program in Rwanda and later represented IDRC in the CGIAR system. He led the development of a strategy through which CIAT transitioned toward a research for development (R4D) approach within the framework of rural livelihoods. His tenure laid foundations for CIAT’s work in nutrition, climate change, and ecosystem services—now core to its mission—and advanced their integration into agricultural research for development. He played a pivotal role in expanding and strengthening CIAT’s work in Africa.

Dr. Voss believed in young scientists and professionals. During his leadership, he brought in a new generation of talent whose contributions would go on to shape and advance some of CIAT’s most impactful and groundbreaking work in the years that followed. His commitment to nurturing human capital remains part of his enduring legacy. He also understood that scientific excellence is built not only in laboratories and fields, but through human connection—encouraging a campus culture where informal spaces, such as café tienda, fostered dialogue, exchange of ideas, and the kind of everyday interactions that underpin collaboration and innovation. During Dr. Voss’s tenure, CIAT established an on-campus childcare facility, an important step in advancing staff wellbeing and creating a more supportive environment for new parents.

While his time as Director General coincided with complex institutional dynamics, his contributions to laying CIAT’s scientific foundations in nutrition and climate change and to renewing its talent base are lasting and significant.

On behalf of the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and former colleagues. We honor his service to the global agricultural research community.
