Central American Agricultural Council and the Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), renew their commitment to sustainable agriculture in the SICA region

On June 25, 2024 in San José, Costa Rica, the Central American Agricultural Council (CAC for its Spanish acronym) and the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT signed the renewal of their cooperation agreement, marking a new stage in their joint commitment to promote more sustainable, resilient and climate-adapted agriculture in the region.

This agreement, which extends the collaboration started a decade ago, builds on achievements in key areas such as the formulation and implementation of the Strategy for Climate-Smart Agriculture; the implementation and scaling up of the Local Technical Agro-Climatic Committee; the strengthening of the conservation and use of Mesoamerican phytogenetic resources for the adaptation of agriculture to climate change; the development of biofortified varieties of beans, cassava and rice; the promotion of innovations for digital agricultur; and the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions in food production systems. These achievements have enabled the adoption of best agricultural practices and knowledge management to create a strong network of collaboration across the region.

"The renewal of the agreement reaffirms our commitment to continue working together to overcome the agricultural, food and environmental challenges of the future. We will continue to expand our impact and forge partnerships that drive rural development and sustainability in the region," said Jenny Wiegel, Sub-regional Director for Central America of the Alliance of Bioversity international and CIAT.

This new agreement includes collaboration in strategic areas such as the management and implementation of regional policies and programs, the strengthening of technical and scientific capacities, the generation and dissemination of knowledge, and the promotion of partnerships with other regional and international organizations. 

"In these 10 years of working together, we have made significant progress in promoting a more sustainable and resilient agriculture in the region," said Lucrecia Rodríguez Peñalba, Executive Secretary of the Central American Agricultural Council. "The renewal of this agreement reaffirms our commitment to work to promote innovation, research and capacity building in the agricultural sector in our region," said Rodríguez.

We are embarking on a new phase of cooperation and sustainable development, joining efforts to strengthen agriculture in our region and promote a more prosperous future for all. Collaboration between new regional and international organizations will be key to expanding our impact, forging partnerships that will drive rural development and sustainability throughout the region.
