In a recent blog, Bioversity International research fellow Gennifer Meldrum reports from the Terra Madre event and describes it as "a fantastic expression of collective passion for the diverse tastes, smells, colors, shapes and textures of food, as well as hope and vision for a future where quality food is more abundant and sustainably produced and consumed."
Terra Madre - Salone Internazionale del Gusto - a colourful celebration of food diversity - was held in Turin, Italy from 23 to 27 October, 2014. Terra Madre allowed for international and Italian vendors to display their products, and served as a setting for farmers, foodies and well-known figures from the nutrition and food arena to engage in a dialogue about the sustainability of our food system, the future of family farming and the protection of agricultural biodiversity.
Scientists from Bioversity International participated in several events as part of the Indigenous Terra Madre side-event in which the roles of indigenous people as custodians of agricultural biodiversity were highlighted and explored.
