Host-determined traits influence nodule initiation, development, and function. and can be of major importance to the proper functioning of the legume Rhizobium symbiosis under field conditions. Thls paper reviews such traits and considers their implications for practically oriented breeding programs aimed at enhanced N2 fixation.
