Consultation workshop: Advancing agritech innovation in Colombia
The Consultation Workshop: Advancing Agritech Innovation in Colombia is a collaborative forum powered by the Accelerate for Impact Platform (A4IP) of the Alliance Bioversity International and CIAT in partnership with the Secretariat of Economic Development of the Mayor’s Office of Santiago de Cali, the Cali Chamber of Commerce, Reddi Colombia and Icesi University, and funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation through its voluntary contribution to the Alliance.
The event will take place on September 8th, 2026, from 08:00 to 16:30, in Cali, Colombia, and from 08:30 to 12:00 for the online segment.
It will bring together a diverse range of stakeholders, including universities and research institutions, startups and entrepreneurs, agribusinesses and corporate partners, innovation support organizations, investors, policymakers, farmer cooperatives and associations, and community representatives. Together, they will assess the feasibility of potential AgriTech initiatives and explore how such mechanisms could be designed to address Colombia’s innovation challenges and opportunities across diverse territories.
This event represents a concrete milestone in Colombia’s long-term strategy to modernize its agrifood system through science, technology, and innovation. It operationalizes the agroindustry and food sovereignty priorities outlined in CONPES 4129’s National Reindustrialization Policy, which promotes precision agriculture, biotechnology-based inputs, and biobased value chains to address productivity gaps. It also advances the innovation-driven growth vision established in CONPES 4069’s National STI Policy 2022–2031 and reinforces the mission-oriented approach defined by PIIOM 2024–2033 for food security and territorial development. Rather than being a standalone activity, the event serves as an implementation mechanism for priorities already established within Colombia’s national planning framework.
This Consultation Workshop also strengthens the connection between these policy frameworks and their implementation on the ground. It builds on PECTIA 2017–2027, Colombia’s decade-long roadmap for agricultural research and innovation under the National Agricultural Innovation System (SNIA), as well as the broader National Science, Technology and Innovation System (SNSTI), which coordinates knowledge generation nationwide. By bringing together stakeholders around digital transformation, the bioeconomy, and sustainable production—areas further supported by Law 2409 of 2024’s provisions on agricultural technification—the event translates public policy commitments into actionable, near-term opportunities for agrifood transformation.
In this context, the Alliance, through the A4IP and in collaboration with its partners, is hosting the workshop to convene key stakeholders and translate national priorities into coordinated action. The initiative will foster international cooperation, institutional strengthening, talent mobilization, and the co-creation of scalable solutions for the agrifood sector.
The outcomes of the workshop will guide the design and strategic priorities of a potential AgriTech4Colombia initiative. The initiative aims to strengthen institutional capacity, mobilize talent, and foster the co-creation of innovative solutions among entrepreneurs, researchers, industry leaders, and other key stakeholders. The workshop will also contribute to building the strategic partnerships required to support the initiative’s future development and implementation.
