The Alliance at the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit 2024
Africa has faced significant land and soil degradation over recent decades, experiencing a decline in soil quality due to its improper use or inadequate management, often linked to agricultural, industrial, or urban activities.
Reports indicate that approximately 75%-80% of the continent's cultivated land is degraded. This not only impacts agricultural productivity but also poses risks to food and nutrition security, rural livelihoods, and environmental sustainability.
In June 2006, the Heads of State and Governments of the African Union endorsed the Abuja Declaration on Fertilizer for the Africa Green Revolution – a continental strategy aimed to reverse the troubling trend of poor soil productivity in Africa.
Fifteen years after the Abuja Declaration, the African Union, in collaboration with AUDA-NEPAD, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and other partners, is organizing the AFSH summit to refine strategies that boost soil productivity, foster economic growth, and enhance overall well-being; and facilitate discussions and actions towards revitalizing Africa's soils for sustainable agricultural development.
The Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, and AICCRA will be attending the event and will organize sessions focused on sharing our expertise in soil preservation and sustainable agriculture practices.
