Dry bean: physiology of yield potential and stress tolerance
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/71266
Abstract
A descriptive and integrated look at the physiology of the bean plant is presented. Initially, the basic physiological processes that determine bean yields are discussed, namely (1) metabolic events such as photosynthesis, respiration, and N metabolism, which have a direct effect on growth, and (2) morphogenic events, such as germination, vegetative and reproductive growth, senescence and abscission, which affect the change in…

https://hdl.handle.net/10568/71686
Abstract
Guidelines are provided to acquaint the personnel of national programs and other collaborators with the procedures to recover, propagate, and transplant culture materials after their arrival. These include: (1) recovery of the cultures by direct potting of cassava plants after short trips; 1 wk. of 2000 lux illumination, 14-h photoperiod, and 26-28 degrees Celsius temp., after 1-2 wk.- trips; and aseptical excision of available…

https://hdl.handle.net/10568/71815
Abstract
Research results obtained by the Cassava and Swine programs at the Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario are discussed. Low HCN var. should be used for swine feeding; the most promising var. is Llanera, which can yield 78 t/ha/10 mo and has a high crude protein content (7.25 percent). Balanced diets using the fresh roots or meal + different protein supplements are given for the life cycle of the swine: gestation, lactation, growing and finishing periods.…

Abstract
The objectives of CIATs Entomology Program are: (1) the survey and identification of insect and mite species in L.A.; (2) establishment of the economic importance of pest species in terms of yield decrease and their geographic distribution; (3) evaluation of cv. for their resistance to determined species; (4) incorporation of resistance in improved vat.; and (5) development of control measures. Priority has been given to var. resistance…

Effects of short days on stem elongation in some indeterminate dry bean cultivars adapted to the tropics
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/71938
Abstract
The effect of 2 daylength treatments (11 and 15 h) on stem elongation was determined in 5 indeterminate bean cv. (G 17650, G 2997, DOR 44, G 5475, and JU 80-11) under growth chamber conditions. Under the short day length, G 17650, a viny indeterminate var. showed the longest stem under all conditions. G 2997 and DOR 44, currently used in Central America in relay cropping, showed the…

Recoleccion de germoplasma de Phaseolus vulgaris en el Centro- Sur del Peru, Mayo 14 - Junio 1, 1988
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/71949
Abstract
Seventy nine samples of two Phaseolus species were collected during a germplasm exploration in Cusco. Of particular interest are: 25 landraces of P. vulgaris (of which 7 are popped beans) and 8 populations of a particular wild common bean. Strong indications about the existence of a crop-weed complex for P. vulgaris in the higher Apurimac are discussed. (AS)
