Combining multiple technologies: integrated soil fertility management
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/119398
Abstract
This chapter shows how Integrated Soil Fertility Management (ISFM) can be combined and integrated further at farm and landscape levels to improve farming system performance. ISFM is an example of a system-wide technology. It is a set of soil fertility management practices, including use of industrial fertilizer, organic inputs, and improved crop varieties, combined with knowledge on how to adapt the practices to local…

From discovery to food system diversification with African neglected and underutilized species
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/115110
Abstract
Africa has a rich botanical heritage; however, only a few species dominate its food systems. Using a selected number of case studies, this chapter describes the steps from discovery of potential new crops, to successful food-system diversification with neglected and underutilized species (NUS). A lot of research gaps to document as well as characterize Africa’s rich edible biodiversity are yet to…

Bioversity for food and nutrition: promoting food security and nutrition through institutional markets in Brazil
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/117354
Abstract
A well-established political and regulatory framework exists in Brazil to promote food security and nutrition. Among its key elements are the Food Purchase Programme (PAA) and the National School Feeding Programme (PNAE), two institutional food procurement programmes that provide equitable support to family farmers by acquiring their products at a fair price and directing them…

Landmark NUS events and key publications
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/114960
Abstract
The beginning of what we may call “the NUS movement” can be traced back to the late 1980s, when the influence of the Green Revolution in shaping agricultural development was still very strong. Not surprisingly, until the early 2000s, the neglected and underutilized species (NUS) narrative was still very limited and NUS were receiving hardly any attention from research agencies, media and donors. In the two decades before that, major actors in…

Management of soil fertility through application of fertilizers
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/119396
Abstract
This chapter presents technologies for replacing the nutrients lost from cropped fields with external fertilizer sources in a manner that minimizes the consequences of too little or too much application. The technology of using industrial fertilizers, organic fertilizers, and application of farmyard manure and compost alone or in combination with industrial fertilizers are discussed in detail.
