Estimating total losses from parasitoids for a field population of a continuously breeding insect, cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus herreni, (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae) in Colombia, S.A.
International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/43419
Abstract
A Phenaccocus herreni Cox & Williams population studied in Colombia, S.A., across a complete cassava crop cycle did not exceed 81 mealybugs/plant. P. herreni densities in Colombia were highest in the dry season, as were levels of…

Diversidad genética de la colección núcleo de silvestres de fríjol común (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) analizados mediante microsatélites fluorescentes
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/77649
Abstract

Breeding for intercrops with special attention to beans for intercropping with maize
International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/69888
Abstract
Some methodologies, including examples, for developing bean var. specifically adapted to intercropping with maize are considered. Since every breeding program has to contend with genotype x environment interactions, decisions have to be made regarding the locations for breeding nurseries, the conditions of soil fertility, and disease…

Reconciling biodiversity conservation and food security: scientific challenges for a new agriculture
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/33369
Abstract
Production ecology and conservation biology have long focused on providing the knowledge base for intensive food production and biodiversity conservation, respectively. With increasing global food insecurity and continuing biodiversity decline, we show that the largely separate development of these fields is counterproductive. Scenario analyses suggest that feeding the world is possible…

Abstract
Two methodologies for rearing grass-feeding spittlebugs are described and were evaluated with Aeneolamia varia (Fabricius) on Brachiaria ruziziensis Germ. & Evrard. To promote biological studies, a new small-scale rearing unit was developed to maintain spittlebug life stages in the greenhouse year round. This unit features a plant…

Simulating infertile acid soils with nutrient solutions: The effects on Brachiaria species
International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/44098
Abstract
Aluminum toxicity limits plant growth in acid soils. Because of their advanced state of weathering, acid soils of the tropics also tend to be deficient in nutrients. A realistic assessment of plant adaptation to these soils would therefore require Al-toxic conditions under which growth is simultaneously limited by nutrient…

The climate of cloud forests
https://hdl.handle.net/10568/41948
Abstract
This chapter analyses the climatic conditions prevailing at sites where tropical montane cloud forests (TMCF) have been reported. Spatial data-sets of climate were used to describe the climate at 477 cloud forest sites identified by United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)-WCMC. Some 85% of the sites are found at altitudes between 400 and 2800 m a.s.l., with an average altitude of 1700 m. The range of altitudes at which cloud forests are found is extensive (220…
