Digital tools increase yields in Colombia 

Digital agriculture tools have reached 24% of rice and maize producers in Colombia (around 4,000 hectares), increasing 2020 yields by 26% on average (41% for maize and 12% for rice). Read more.

Seeds for Needs, a citizen-science-based project where farmers select varieties for local conditions and preferences, has increased diversity in the fields of 25,000 farmers in India. Read more. 

 

25% of Bolivian rice farmers adopt improved variety 

A rice variety developed by the Alliance and the Latin American Fund for Irrigated rice has been adopted by 25% of Bolivian farmers. Known as MAC18, the rice is an extra-long grain variety appreciated for its high yields, good adaptability to both rainfed and irrigated systems, and good grain and cooking quality. Read more. 

 

500,000 Latin American farmers gain access to agro-climatic information 

In collaboration with 420 institutions across 11 Latin American countries, the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security provided more than half a million farmers with access to agro-climatic information to adapt to unpredictable weather. Read more. 

 

Tool for reducing footprint of livestock system increasingly adopted 

Livestock farmers in nine countries have increasingly adopted a tool known as the Comprehensive Livestock Environmental Assessment for improved Nutrition (CLEANED). The tool is designed to influence decision-making processes for livestock systems and has been credited with catalyzing increased interest in environmental issues. Read more. 

 

Agrobiodiversity Index leads to private sector action on improve environment 

The Alliance’s Agrobiodiversity Index was used to encourage 350 food and agriculture companies to take steps toward improving soil health and biodiversity in their operations. 45% provided evidence to demonstrate they were taking these actions. Read more.

Agua de Honduras, a platform designed to support water decision-making in Honduras, is being disseminated to nine new countries. Read more. 

 

Food systems portal leads to youth, small enterprise action 

The Innovative Food Systems Solutions (IFSS) portal now has 100 solutions that have led to 200 on-the-ground actions of implementation. Youth networks and food companies are increasingly using this resource to connect nutrition, environment and food systems transformation. Read more. 

 

Philippines widely implements climate risk framework 

The Philippines adopted the Climate Risk Vulnerability Assessment (CRVA) framework as a standardized tool and implemented it in 54 farming communities. The government mandated the adoption of CRVA to improve the country’s Commodity Investment Plans. Read more. 

 

70,000 farmers in Vietnam receive 10-day weather forecasts, agriculture advisories 

DeRisk Southeast Asia, which provides agroclimatic information for farmers, has been adopted by 70,000 producers in Tien Giang Province. DeRisk is being expanded to six more provinces in the Mekong Delta to support decision-making around crop selection, planting dates, soil preparation, water and nutrient management, pest and disease control and harvesting. Southern Africa Development Community endorses network for crop wild relatives 

The 16-nation Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) endorsed an Alliance-developed regional network for the use and conservation of crop wild relatives (CWR). The network will serve as a platform for CWR stakeholders including researchs, genebank curators, breeders, conservationists and farmers. Read more. 

 

Swiss NGO adopts index for rural women empowerment 

NGO Swisscontact applied three indices for women’s empowerment in agriculture, livestock and market inclusion in Honduras. These tools identify and implement actions to improve women’s levels of empowerment across these value chains. Read more. 

 

35 organizations join climate-smart agriculture platform in Kenya 

The Kenya Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) Multistakeholder Platform now has 35 official members to spread and apply knowledge related to CSA. The platform is expected to continue growing under a 2022-2026 strategic plan. Read more. 

 

Six Guatemalan municipalities, 7,500 households benefit from food security monitoring 

Six municipalities in Guatemala’s Dry Corridor, where acute food insecurity is related to climate change, are benefitting from a community-based platform to monitor climate risk and food security. The system informs decisionmakers’ responses to food-security issues. Read more. 

 

Climate information system reaches some 180,000 farmers in Central America 

A user-centered, digitally integrated and scalable system to generate climate information, use and exchange in Central America involves 200-plus institutions in the region. It now reaches 180,000 farmers to help them grapple with climate-related challenges to production. Read more. 

 

Radio Listener Clubs in Rwanda help close gender gaps in climate information 

Through Radio Listeners Clubs (RLCs) in Rwanda, led by 225 farmer promoters, gathered village groups to weekly meetings to listen to radio programs on climate information, participate in live call-in shows, and create and share action plans and information. Women are the primary beneficiary of the RLCs. Read more.

A suite of climate projects has benefited policymakers in Bangladesh, Colombia, Ethiopia, Senegal and Vietnam. The projects support national policy development, deploy curriculum, bring enhanced climate and weather knowledge to governments and communities. Read more. 

 

Protocol for genebank collaboration in Africa launched and endorsed 

Community and national genebanks in Kenya and Uganda are now better linked through government-supported protocols to exchange seeds and knowledge and to collaborate on conservation. Read more. 

 

Climate-Smart Agriculture innovations lead to 250 transformations including policy in Central America 

CGIAR innovations on Climate-Smart Agriculture led to 252 transformations across Central America. Of these, 182 were in policy and were related to the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of laws, plans, strategies and policies to integrate CSA across the region. Read more. 

 

Last-mile climate information delivery helps 33,000 farmers in 5 Latin American countries 

Climate-Smart Villages in Guatemala and Honduras, as well as hundreds of small-scale farmers in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru received “last-mile” delivery of climate information to mitigate risk. In Honduras and Guatemala, a survey showed that 60% of farmers perceived yield and production benefits due to this information. Read more. 

 

Rice varieties lower costs, improve production for rice farmers in Ecuador 

The adoption of rice varieties from the Alliance and the Latin American Fund for Irrigated rice contributed to lower costs for almost 6 of 10 rice farmers in Ecuador between 2014 and 2019. According to the producers who used these varieties, one of the reasons for planting them was the high commercial demand. Read more. 

 

Ucayali, Peru, adopts deforestation-free, low-emissions strategies for cocoa and palm oil value 

 

The government of Ucayali, Peru adopted Alliance-developed strategies for deforestation-free and low-emission value chains in cacao and oil palm. The strategies will lead to business models that will contribute to Peru’s global commitments to reducing greenhouse gas emissions while improving agricultural development. Read more.
