Robin Buruchara
Dr. Robin Arani Buruchara is an accomplished plant pathologist with over 32 years of experience in agricultural research and development across Africa. He has led impactful research for development (R4D) initiatives through key research and leadership roles at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and as Director of the Pan-Africa Bean Research Alliance (PABRA).
Dr. Buruchara has spearheaded multi-country, multi-institutional, and interdisciplinary partnerships to advance bean-based technologies and drive agricultural transformation. His efforts have significantly enhanced food security, nutrition, and market-driven opportunities for smallholder farmers across 31 African countries. Under his leadership, PABRA achieved significant milestones, including varietal improvements, advancements in seed systems, and the conceptualization and adoption of the Bean Commodity Corridor Approach, which has reached over 27 million households with improved bean technologies. These achievements have earned PABRA prestigious accolades, including the 2019 Al Sumait Prize and the 2023 Africa Food Prize.
As Regional Director of CIAT Africa for nearly a decade, Dr. Buruchara broadened CIAT’s thematic focus to include forages, climate change adaptation, and market systems. His leadership facilitated policy influence, capacity building, and strengthened collaboration with governments, research institutions, and development partners. He also fostered strategic partnerships that extended CIAT’s footprint across Africa.
Beyond institutional leadership, Dr. Buruchara is deeply committed to capacity building, having mentored over 60 PhD, MSc, and BSc students and developed frameworks to support institutional growth. His work has resulted in 78 refereed publications and over 700 citations, reflecting significant academic and practical contributions. Since 2020, as an independent consultant, he has supported organizations such as FARA, AGRA, and the Alliance of Bioversity-CIAT, focusing on agribusiness learning alliances, synergistic linkages with the CGIAR, capacity strengthening, and resource mobilization.
Fluent in English, with proficiency in French and Spanish, Dr. Buruchara remains a leading figure in African agricultural development, research innovation, and capacity building.
