Charlotte Penel Former staff

Dr. Charlotte Penel is a climate, peace and security specialist at CGIAR Climate Security in Latin America, providing research and policy advice on the intersections of climate change, human security risks, migration, and gender in the region. Her research takes an intersectional and gender lens that is centred on understanding this nexus, as well as how these impacts differ according to multiple factors including gender and other social identities such as age, ethnicity, and income levels and in turn how these characteristics can either undermine resilience or strengthen it. By understanding these interconnecting issues, it can help policymakers, donors, and other stakeholders develop the appropriate tools necessary to support vulnerable groups in building resilience through integrated solutions that address the humanitarian-development nexus. She specialises in qualitative methods including semi-structured interview, focus group discussions and participatory methods. Charotte has a PhD in International Security from the University of Liverpool, UK, as well as a Masters of International Relations and International Law at the University of New South Wales Australia. She also received a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Latin American studies and Government and International Relations at the University of Sydney.
