Byron Reyes

Byron Reyes is an agricultural economist specializing in impact evaluation of agricultural research and innovation on smallholder farmer behavior, market participation, production, food security, and income in developing countries. His work applies experimental and non-experimental methods to study staple, cash, and high-value crop markets, seed systems, and market access for food system stakeholders.

He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Agricultural Economics from Michigan State University and a B.S. from Zamorano, Honduras. Since 2014, he has implemented diverse impact evaluations and socioeconomic studies, and more recently has led Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning, and Impact Assessment (MELIA) teams for CGIAR Initiatives and bilateral projects. Additionally, he has designed over 20 household surveys across 10 countries, and contributed to more than 85 funding proposals. He has research experience across Latin America, Africa, and Asia.

He has authored or co-authored several peer-reviewed journal articles, including a 2025 study in Agricultural Systems on improved bean varieties and yield outcomes in Central America and Haiti, plus recent publications in Development in Practice, Journal of Rural Studies, and other journals. He has also produced numerous technical reports and working papers on scaling improved varieties, market systems, and deforestation agreements, among other topics.
