Weaving qualitative and quantitative approaches: toward deeper understanding of socio-ecological systems
The Learning Note argues that qualitative and quantitative research methods should be combined rather than treated as opposites. Qualitative approaches provide depth, context, and understanding of local realities, while quantitative methods allow measurement, comparison, and generalization. Starting with rich qualitative data helps preserve nuance, which can later be quantified, whereas purely quantitative data cannot regain lost context. Integrating both approaches leads to more robust, credible, and actionable insights, especially for understanding complex socio-ecological systems and informing effective decision-making.
