Turning waste into wealth: Empowering farmer groups through black soldier fly enterprise training in Uganda

A three-day training on Black Soldier Fly (BSF) enterprise establishment and management was held from 28–30 May 2026 at Kabanyolo CAEC, Uganda, under the BRAINS Project and supported by the Uganda Climate Smart Agricultural Transformation Project (UCSATP). The training brought together 25 participants from 11 farmer enterprises across Kaberamaido, Isingiro, and Serere districts to strengthen technical, practical, and business skills in BSF production. Participants gained knowledge on BSF biology, waste-to-feed conversion, value addition, enterprise planning, and record management through classroom sessions, practical demonstrations, and field visits. Farmer experiences highlighted the potential of BSF farming to reduce livestock feed costs, improve profitability, and promote sustainable waste management. The training concluded with a commitment to establish a BSF Multi-Stakeholder Platform (MSP) to enhance collaboration, knowledge sharing, and market development, reinforcing BSF farming as a viable climate-smart agribusiness opportunity.
