Scaling the integration of micro and small enterprises and smallholder farmers into school meals programs in Kenya

This solution track addresses inadequate access to nutritious school meals in Kenya’s urban informal settlements while creating institutional market opportunities for local micro and small enterprises and smallholder farmers. The integrated procurement model strengthens Local Business Associations in food safety, quality, procurement, logistics and business management, while engaging schools, parents and communities to build demand for healthy, locally sourced meals. Working initially in Nairobi and Kisumu, the approach links supplier readiness with school registration, compliance, community participation and policy engagement. By 2028, the track aims to integrate 1,000 micro and small enterprises and smallholder farmers into school food supply chains, engage 120 schools and support access to diverse, locally sourced meals for 24,000 students.
