Proyecto nacional de reconversión y sostenibilidad ganadera: Producción sostenible, nutrición animal con enfoque a cambio climático

Ecuador's livestock sector is actively pursuing sustainable production and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions through the implementation of best practices. Projections indicate that emissions could reach 32,730 Gg CO2e by 2070 if current trends continue, prompting a target of a 41% reduction through enhancements in sustainable productivity. In 24 provinces, best practices with emphasis on silvopastoral interventions were implemented at model farms that serve as educational platforms for technology transfer and productivity assessment from 2022 to 2025. The environmental impacts were assessed using the CLEANED tool. Findings showed 7% reduction in nitrogen balance, improved soil erosion management, and a 9% increase in milk production. While greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram of milk remained stable, there was a notable 9% reduction per kilogram of weight gain, reflecting enhanced livestock efficiency. Ultimately, mainly as a result of increased carbon capture, total net emissions reduced by 65% exceeding national climate mitigation goals.
