The Promise of Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS): A vehicle for fair local food systems transformation

Presentation given by the Kenya team of the CGIAR Science Program on Multifunctional Landscapes at the Kenya National PGS Workshop in October 2026. The team presented three papers about the promise of participatory guarantee systems (PGS), a participatory certification system for smallholder farmers to certify, aggregate and market their organic and/or agroecological produce, for local food system transformation:

1) Introduction and context of the Alliance work on PGS. Understanding the role of PGS as vehicle of agroecological food system transformation
2) Insights from praxis: Implementing an agroecological adaptation of PGS in the Agroecological Living Landscape in Kiambu County
3) Understanding incentives: What do different actors in the PGS “institutional ecosystem” need to realise PGS’ potential for local food system transformation
4) Conceptual development: Understanding the potential of participatory guarantee systems (PGS) to deliver agroecological food system transformation
5) The way forward: Further conceptual, implementation and research collaboration opportunities
