PROBES snapshot: Ask the Data (ATD), accelerating reproducible research with AI

This one-page brief, developed by the Digital Transformation Accelerator (DTA) team at the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, is based on the Ask the Data probe led by Piero Palacios, Data Scientist and Statistical Specialist at CIP. The probe explores how generative AI can support researchers in interacting with complex datasets through natural language, reducing reliance on code or specialized analytical tools. It tests whether large language models can generate reliable, transparent, and reproducible analytical outputs while maintaining scientific rigor and data governance standards. Implemented as a safe-to-fail, early-stage experiment, the probe focuses on learning what works, what does not, and under which conditions AI-assisted data exploration can meaningfully support research workflows. The brief synthesizes key insights from the probe to inform future design decisions and potential scaling of AI-enabled research tools within CGIAR.
