Across the East and Horn of Africa, pastoralist women are already
leading climate adaptation and not waiting to be included in it. Evidence
from key informant interviews with 20 organizations working in Kenya,
Somalia, Tanzania and South Africa shows that women possess and
apply detailed indigenous ecological knowledge of weather patterns,
water sources, livestock health, seed preservation and rangeland
conditions, and are the primary architects of the everyday coping and
adaptation strategies that keep pastoral households functioning through
drought, flood and displacement. Yet this leadership is almost entirely
informal, undocumented, and unfunded.
