Monitoring and evaluating Nature Based Solutions (NbS) to manage Kenya’s biodiversity hotspots: Inception workshop report

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD), through its Climate Change Unit (CCU), in collaboration with the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT under the CGIAR Climate Action Science Program, and with support from the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT) and the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre convened key stakeholders to align on the project’s scope and approach for developing an Nature-based Solutions (NbS) Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) framework. The objectives were to (i) provide a shared overview of the project and its alignment with national and global climate goals, including Kenya’s NDC commitments, (ii) identify priority, agriculture-relevant NbS practices and map suitable metrics, tools, and methodologies for measuring outcomes (using Chyulu Hills as a case example), and (iii) clarify stakeholder roles and responsibilities for co-design, data collection, and implementation. In addition, the workshop served as a kick-off forum, bringing stakeholders together to share experiences, build a common understanding, and catalyze collaboration.
