Investigating farmers’ willingness to pay for weather-indexed insurance for coffee production in the central highlands of Vietnam

This study is part of the project “De-Risking coffee from climate disasters: Upscaling coffee climate protection insurance for Vietnamese smallholder coffee producers,” which aims to strengthen the resilience of smallholder coffee farmers in Vietnam by developing and scaling climate risk insurance tailored to local conditions. Conducted by the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT in collaboration with the Pepper Research and Development Center, the research focuses on farmers in Vietnam’s Central Highlands and examines their willingness to pay (WTP) for weather-indexed insurance (WII) products for coffee production. The study has four main objectives: (1) to assess farmer preferences and willingness to pay for different WII product designs; (2) to analyze differences across groups and prior experience with insurance; (3) to evaluate the role of farmer and household characteristics in shaping insurance preferences; and (4) to estimate adoption likelihood for various WII products in order to inform effective product design and targeting.
