Innovation brings promise, but who bears the burden?

Are new agricultural technologies inadvertently burdening women?
In Makueni County, Socio-Technical Innovation Bundles (STIBs) promise higher yields and improved nutrition, but an unequal division of labour threatens this progress. Women handle the bulk of farm work to implement these innovations, often without assistance. Entrenched norms dictate that women bear the physical weight of farming, while men frequently disengage from labour yet retain control over resources, proceeds, and decisions. To unlock the true potential of STIBs, families must co-design solutions. Through Gender Action Learning System (GALS) workshops and community barazas, we mobilise leaders to challenge outdated norms and encourage men to share farm work and income decisions. A balanced future is possible. Watch as a joint effort transforms lives and join us in redefining gender roles to build resilient communities!
