Launched in 2023 with USAID support up to 2025, the Suelos de Honduras initiative developed the country’s first National Soil Information System (NSIS) and Digital Soil Fertility Map reducing Honduras’ dependence on imported fertilizers and limited soil data. The system enhances fertilizer efficiency, reduces production costs, lowers environmental impacts, and improves soil health and agricultural sustainability. Following USAID’s withdrawal in 2025, the project transitioned to a nationally led, multi-stakeholder collaboration model, the Honduran Soil Alliance (HSA), led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. The HSA initiative strengthened technical capacity, mobilized public investment, and positioned NSIS as the foundational tool for national evidence-based fertilizer recommendations and agricultural decision-making.
