Food system transformation in Amhara Region, Ethiopia: Identifying barriers and co-developing solutions through multi-stakeholder engagement
This report outlines the key barriers within the Amhara Region food system and the corresponding solutions, as well as the steps and processes undertaken to carry out this work. The initiative was led by EPHI and FoNSE, in collaboration with the Alliance Bioversity International and CIAT, and is fully aligned with national priorities for food system transformation. A multi-step methodology was employed, comprising a preparation phase, two sequential consultative workshops, and synthesis of inputs at post-workshop time. The analysis of barriers and the formulation of solutions was structured around the seven Ethiopian food system game changing clusters outlined in the national food systems roadmap: (1) availability and accessibility of safe, nutrient-dense foods; (2) sustainable and equitable healthy diets; (3) integrated policy and resilience; (4) mechanization, digital technologies, and innovation; (5) market access and infrastructure; (6) risk management and social protection; and (7) sustainable urbanization and electrification.
Across these clusters, the assessment identified critical bottlenecks which include the persistence of inadequate technologies as a major barrier to food system transformation in Amhara region followed by institutional deficiencies and lack of awareness. The outputs provided a concise, actionable set of region-specific recommendations intended to guide planning, investment, and cross-sectoral collaboration for a resilient and sustainable Amhara region food system.
