Evidence-driven shift toward nitrogen- and phosphorus-based fertilizer strategies to boost Ethiopia’s cereal systems

Over the past five years, Ethiopia has reassessed its national fertilizer strategy by shifting from generalized blended fertilizers to evidence-based, site-specific nutrient management for cereal systems. Led by the Alliance, the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), and the Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture, the initiative combined nutrient-response trials, historical datasets, soil mapping, and machine-learning analytics to identify the most effective fertilizer investments and inform national policy reform.
