Evaluation of new forage hybrids and mixes for silvopasture in Laos by Tricot methodology
Livestock production provides opportunities for income generation in rural areas but also comes with environmental risks where it involves increased forest land conversion to pasture. Silvopasture (i.e. the combination of trees, forages, and shrubs with livestock operations) is a promising approach to address these concerns. Nevertheless, farmers face many challenges in improving and diversifying pasture systems, due to lack of incentives, knowledge on suitable techniques, input supply and credit options, as well as competing land use demands.
This research is conducted under the CGIAR Sustainable Farming Science program, building upon the Mixed Farming Systems (MFS) initiative which operated in Laos from 2022 to 2024. Under this initiative, a partnership of CGIAR and the National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI) aimed to address these challenges through the development and improvement of silvopastoral systems in upland farming systems in Laos.
