Colombia adopts a national system for zero-deforestation traceability in agrifood supply chains

In Colombia, the Alliance of Bioversity International & CIAT co-developed the Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) Protocol for Zero Deforestation, which subsequently served as the methodological foundation for the National MRV System for Zero Deforestation. The national system now supports traceability, monitoring, and reporting of deforestation risks across agri-food supply chains, with initial implementation in the cocoa, beef, and dairy sectors.
Through partnerships with government agencies and national programs, the initiative established an interoperable, farm-level MRV framework that informs public policy, corporate due diligence and climate reporting, including its integration into Colombia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0 to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC). From this point onward, this case study refers to the adopted instrument as the National MRV system.
