Colombia adopts first tier 2 emission factors for the agricultural sector in its national GHG inventory

Between 2022 and 2025, CGIAR, the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, and the Biocarbono Orinoquia project partnered with the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM) and Colombian ministries to strengthen Colombia’s agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) system. Using spatial analysis and field-based emissions monitoring in the Orinoquia region, the initiative developed the country’s first Tier 2 emission factors for rice and livestock systems, improving the accuracy and transparency of national climate reporting and mitigation planning.
